A hush settled over the children and adults sitting in the circle. The StoryKeeper, her kaleidoscope eyes bright in the flickering firelight, all other eyes fixed on her in patient anticipation, began…
Not that long ago, in the Western Realm, Inside the Veil, just to the West of where you are sitting now, people were suffering a great deal.
There was war and hate and great anger and discontent. People were enslaved in body, mind, and spirit, their bodies bought and sold, their minds were their prisons, their souls bound in the webs of their own making. They worshiped false gods like money and power and chose to play games where there were no winners, believing that what they were living was reality...

In writing this series, I don’t want to orate or evangelize a better world or how we should live, but tell a collective story with compassion, insight, and grace. Although Veil’s Edge reflects on our current society, it is not a story of how we should be–it’s a story of what we could be. The meaning code of my work is embedded in the metaphor and in the mythology that resides in every one of our stories. My books are not a forced bitter pill but an enlivening ember of possibility...
THE WORLD AT VEIL'S EDGE
Although it can look like business as usual Inside the Veil–people going to their jobs, to school, entranced by whatever task is on their schedules for the day, whatever is on the airwaves, on their social media feeds–life in the Western Realm is collapsing. All around them wars rage. The streets are unsafe. Families and relationships unravel. Poverty and injustice are everyday realities. And like an old, crackling radio, they can tune out the noise–because when they tune in, it’s too loud to bear.
The Western Realm is a disconnected existence of fear and battle, numbness and discontent, noise and distraction, scarcity and lack, sorrow, grief, and regret. There are plenty of riches, but they are of the wrong kind. For those living there, there is never enough, and they survive by stealing, hoarding, or hiding from the next blow, from the struggle, from the reality they created.
The Western Realm is a world imploding on itself.
