In writing this series, I don’t want to orate or evangelize a better world or how we should live, but tell a collective story with compassion, insight, and grace. Although Veil’s Edge reflects on our current society, it is not a story of how we should be–it’s a story of what we could be. The meaning code of my work is embedded in the metaphor and in the mythology that resides in every one of our stories. This story is not a forced bitter pill but an enlivening ember of possibility.

So, the books begin with the universal truth that we need connection to not only survive but also to thrive. We code/flatline/die when we pull the plug of our connection. Many an epic masterpiece of literature and film have explored what our future could hold if we continue to be asleep to the ways in which we are living and operating, what an Apocalypse might look like. But Veil’s Edge is not Dystopian. Nor is it Utopian. It is a fantastical journey more real than our current reality: it explores first chaos, then integration, first death, then resurrection–a society, a world, on the cusp of a Renaissance.

The series will not nor is it intended to leave you trying to revive the world with one drop of water in a desolate wasteland, but to reveal the entire ocean in that one single drop that can nourish us fully at any time. It moves on from awareness, from watching the train wreck, to actually stopping the train. And once the train has stopped, we can see that we have always had the opportunity to arrive.

Storytelling is one way for us to reconnect to self, others, the earth, and the universe. Not by regurgitating or fixating on the past, but by witnessing it, receiving it, with the intent to recreate our reality with meaning and wisdom, by re-membering, retelling, and reinventing.

These books are an invitation to break out of the trance of our current Matrix and become entranced with a possible New World through the shared experience of the story, the resonance and frequency of the spoken word, the electricity of the intention we plug into.

So, I humbly but with great enthusiasm invite you to enter the world of Veil’s Edge with me! Let us gather around the fire.

Although it can look like business as usual Inside the Veil–people going to their jobs, to school, entranced by whatever task is on their schedules for the day, whatever is on the airwaves, on their social media feeds–life in the Western Realm is collapsing. All around them wars rage. The streets are unsafe. Families and relationships unravel. Poverty and injustice are everyday realities. And like an old, crackling radio, they can tune out the noise–because when they tune in, it’s too loud to bear.

The Western Realm is a disconnected existence of fear and battle, numbness and discontent, noise and distraction, scarcity and lack, sorrow, grief, and regret. There are plenty of riches, but they are of the wrong kind. For those living there, there is never enough, and they survive by stealing, hoarding, or hiding from the next blow, from the struggle, from the reality they created.

The Western Realm is a world imploding on itself.

Life in the Eastern Realm is much different–the people are intimately connected through their hearts and minds–with access to the EarthScape, the DreamScape, and the ComsoScape, it is a place where the people thrive steeped in a rich and sacred culture of respect, connection, ingenuity, genius, eldership, and love–an impassioned existence teeming with life and endless possibility.

Is this Utopia? Ah, yes, perhaps. But more accurately, it is a Realm of Possibility.

What the Westerners don’t know is that it was they, themselves, who created their prison and continue to shackle themselves to it; the Eastern stewards at Veil’s Edge have taken up the task of breaking them free. Families are broken, lives are lost, people suffer, as the Western Realm collapses around them, but they, at any time, have the power to save themselves and each other…and it is for their very survival that they remember, that they become conscious, that they take a deep breath, take off their blindfolds to see again.

There is great beauty that still exists for the Westerners, and they fleetingly glimpse it, but are these glimpses enough for the paths to the Eastern Realm to show themselves, to allow them to pass through?

The story begins after The Great Collapse and during The Great Awakening which was the catalyst for The Great Migration of people seeking a More Beautiful World, a world they would find outside of the Veil.

The story begins with the death of a Beloved, and also a birth, an Ember, and so it goes…

The lives of Easterners Kalea and Anahata, their daughter Camaria, her children Molina, Indigo, Cressida, Poppy, and Coda, and Westerners John and Jane, Bellatrix, Jack, Ombretta, and Kage, are woven together into a glorious tapestry of this More Beautiful World, a world born out of the stuff of dreams and possibility.

But what will this Great Awakening take–from the people at Veil’s Edge and the people Inside the Veil–and will they all make it out alive, whatever that means? Or what will it give, what will it give to them all?
